During the four weeks of Advent, millions of Christians around the world participate in the lighting of advent candles, a meaningful tradition that symbolically prepares our hearts and minds for the miraculous birth of our Lord and Saviour.
Each Sunday morning throughout November 30 to December 21, we will light a different candle of the advent wreath to symbolize and remember the hope, peace, joy and love that God's incarnation brings to humanity. The fifth candle, known as the Christ candle, will be lit on Christmas Eve.
"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
John 8:12 (NIV)
"Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs."

Blue Christmas "Shattered Joy"
Sunday, December 21

Did you know the shortest sentence in the Bible is, "Jesus wept." It appears in John 11:35 (NIV). This was the heartfelt emotional response of the Lord God when he saw Mary and others weeping over Lazarus' death. We are told that Jesus was also "deeply moved in spirit and troubled." (John 11:33, NIV). This story shows us that God is familiar with our grief and sorrows. He cares for us, and he mourns with us.
So, if you are experiencing loss or grief this Christmas season, the Blue Christmas worship service at Byron United Church, London, Ontario is for you. We will invite everyone in attendance to hang a shard of beautiful but broken glass on our Christmas tree in memory of their loved one.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."
Matthew 5:4 (NIV)
"But Jesus called the children to him and said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'"
Luke 18:16 (NIV)

Luke 2: 10-11 (NIV)
